What is the mediation process?
When people are in conflict, powerful feelings such as anger, fear, and defensiveness may shut down communication. Without meaningful dialogue, relationships deteriorate, problems fester, and conflict may escalate.
The mediation process is designed to support parties in conflict in making decisions about important issues in their lives. All decisions in a mediation session are in the hands of the parties, including decisions on guidelines and goals. Through the process, the parties may gain new understandings of one another and make decisions on how to resolve the conflict.
The role of the mediator is to help the parties to talk and to listen to each other. The mediator is not there to judge or to make decisions for the parties. Mediation is a confidential process, and MCMC mediators will not reveal anything discussed in mediation without permission from all parties (with the exceptions of threats to people or property and fraud). Mediation communication and documents are privileged information.
